The Gambia, a British crown colony since 1843, became independent in 1965. It is ruled by a presidential regime elected on the basis of a multiparty system. In 1981 Gambia and Senegal established the Senegambian Confederation. While maintaining their sovereignty the two countries have a common government and parliament.
